St. Cecilia's Choir

Many
of us remember when the singing of hymns during Mass was a rarity.
Influenced by the 2nd Vatican Council, there was a growth in the use of
hymns we sing at Mass. Although some may prefer Mass without music, the
music is not a decorative extra. Silent meditation can be an appropriate
part of our religious life. But during a congregational celebration, music
and liturgy are intertwined. Hymns sung during Mass are not chosen at
random, but are selected to reflect and support the liturgy of the word:
that is, readings and gospel of the day. Thus, with appropriate song, the
meaning of the liturgy is enhanced.
Actually, the very idea of Mass as a celebration implies
the need for song in the liturgy. Music serves the needs of people assembled
in prayer, and music ministry supports the community in prayer. In
particular, those participating in music ministry as members of our choir
take on the role of leading the congregation
in liturgical song.
The adult choir of our parish rehearsals
in the Music Room. We sing at Mass weekly (but no longer ’weakly’ due to our
growing membership). In addition, we have been participating with five other
Catholic choirs in our Irondequoit region to present impressive choral
concerts as a large group (although this is not a prerequisite to membership
in the St. Cecilia choir). We welcome returning members, and we encourage
and are always receptive to new members. With increasing size, we can better
create the musical support that our liturgies deserve.

CHILDREN'S CHOIR
The children's choir
rehearses and performs approximately once a month. We would still like to have additional members join (ages 6-12). We would also like to form a Youth Choir, ages 12-15. Please call Jack Fiannaca (723-1459) if you (or your youth/child) are interested, or if you have any questions regarding either of these choirs.
